Palapag
Palapag, Northern Samar is a historically rich municipality spanning 17,960 hectares across 32 barangays with a population of 34,034. Priding itself as the former capital of the olden Ibabao region of Samar Island, Palapag holds four of the province's eight National Historical Commission markers: honoring 17th-century rebel Agustin Sumuroy, the Royal Port of Palapag, the ruins of the 1605 Jesuit-built Old Palapag Church (featuring two historic bells dated 1793 and 1870), and historian Fr. Francisco Ignacio Alcina, SJ. Beyond its historical significance, the town features the ancient Daungang Galleon ng Palapag (Mapno Port) – a 127-meter cruciform port that served as an anchorage for Acapulco galleons – alongside natural wonders such as Palihon Island with its orangey summer sands, and the 75-meter-high Rakitdakit Rock Formation in Barangay Nipa. Palapag is also recognized as the province's leading cattle producer, a major source of yellowfin tuna, and is known for traditional culinary treats like Huruhagdan and Salukara
How to get there?
To get to Palapag, you can take a van from Catarman to Palapag via the Samar Pacific Coastal Road, which takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes for a distance of about 65 km. Alternatively, you can take a van or minibus from Catarman Land Transport Terminal bound to Rawis (about 1 hour and 30 minutes), followed by a short motorboat ride to Laoang Island. From there, take a tricycle to Calomotan, ride another motorboat to Pangpang in Palapag, and finally take a tricycle to reach Palapag Proper.
